1. Getting Started
1.1 What Is Break Board
Break Board is a scoring and league-management app for clay target shooting — Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays, and 5-Stand. It runs in your phone's browser (no app store install required, though it can be added to your home screen like an app). It handles round-by-round scoring, squad check-in and queue management, weekly and season-long league standings with handicaps, team schedules, flights, and roster management.
1.2 Two Ways In: Club Login vs. Your Own Account
There are two different ways to sign in, and it matters which one you use:
- Club Login — one shared code and password for the whole club. Anyone at the club can sign in with it. This is meant for club-owned devices (a front-desk tablet, a check-in station) and for club administration — setting up leagues, printing sign-in cards, managing the club's Sporting Clays course.
- Your Own Account — a personal login with your own email and password, free to use. This is meant for individual shooters using their own phone. Once signed in, you enter a club's code to join that club's league and pull in their course — no club password needed.
1.3 Installing on Your Phone
Break Board isn't in the App Store or Play Store — you install it straight from the browser, and it behaves like a normal app afterward (its own icon, opens full-screen).
- Open Break Board in your phone's browser.
- You'll see an "Add to Home Screen" button right at the top of the sign-in screen (and again later in Profile).
- Tap it. On most Android phones this installs in one tap. On iPhone, Apple doesn't allow that — you'll instead see a short 3-step picture guide (tap Share, then Add to Home Screen, then Add).
2. For Individual Shooters (Your Own Account)
2.1 Creating Your Account
- On the sign-in screen, tap "I'm a Shooter."
- Tap "New Account."
- Enter your name, your email, and a password (at least 6 characters).
- Tap Create Account.
This account is free and belongs only to you — nobody else can sign into it, and it isn't tied to any one club.
2.2 Joining a Club
After signing in, you'll land on a "My Clubs" screen.
- Enter the club's code in the "Join Another Club" box. (Ask the club or your league organizer for their code — it's not a secret, more like a username.)
- Tap Join Club.
- You're in — this pulls in that club's league(s) and Sporting Clays course automatically.
You can join as many clubs as you like. Each one shows up as its own entry on your My Clubs screen.
2.3 Switching Between Clubs
Go to Profile and tap "Switch Club." This takes you back to My Clubs, where you can enter a different club or join a new one.
2.4 Forgot Your Password
On the sign-in screen, under "I'm a Shooter," tap "Forgot password?" and enter your email. You'll get a reset link — this uses your real email directly, so it works the same way password resets do on any other site.
↑ Back to top3. For Clubs (Club Login)
3.1 Creating Your Club
- On the sign-in screen, make sure "Club Login" is selected at the top.
- Tap "New Club."
- Enter your club's name, pick a short club code (this is what people will type to sign in or to join your league/course — not a secret), pick a shared password, and enter a recovery email.
- Tap Create Club.
3.2 Signing In
Anyone at the club can sign in with the same code and password from any device — front desk, personal phones, a kiosk. There's no per-person login for club mode; everyone shares the one login.
3.3 Recovery Email & Forgot Password
If the password is forgotten, tap "Forgot password?" on the sign-in screen, enter the club code, and a reset link goes to the recovery email on file. If your club was set up a long time ago and has no recovery email yet, add one from Profile → Password Recovery so this works if you ever need it.
3.4 Printing a Sign-In Card
From Profile, under "Print Sign-In Card," type the club password (it's never stored in the app, so you re-enter it each time you print) and tap Generate. This downloads a printable card with your club name, code, and password — handy to post at the scoring table so scorekeepers can sign in on their own phones.
3.5 Free Trial & Licensing
New clubs get a free trial period. After it ends, the club needs to be licensed to keep using the app — this is a one-time payment for lifetime access, not a subscription. If your trial has ended, you'll see a screen with contact information and an "I Just Paid — Check Again" button to unlock immediately once payment is confirmed.
↑ Back to top4. Scoring a Round
4.1 Solo vs. Squad
On the Score tab, choose Solo (just you) or Squad (a group scoring together, taking turns). Squad mode supports up to 5 shooters for Trap/Skeet/5-Stand, or up to 8 for Sporting Clays.
4.2 Choosing a Discipline
Pick Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays, or 5-Stand. Each discipline keeps its own separate scoring history, handicap, and league standings — they never mix.
For Sporting Clays specifically, if you're visiting a different club, there's a "Visiting? Load Their Course By Code" field right on the Score tab — enter their club code and their exact station names and target counts load in automatically, no need to know their password.
4.3 Entering Hits and Misses
Once a round starts, you can score two ways:
- Tap HIT or MISS — fills in the next unscored target automatically. This is the fastest way for most people.
- Tap a target directly — cycles it empty → hit → miss → empty. Useful for fixing a mistake without redoing the whole round.
4.4 Counting Toward a League
If you're in a league that covers the discipline you're scoring, a toggle appears: "Count toward league." Turn it on before finishing the round for it to count toward that league's standings. It's off by default, so practice rounds don't accidentally show up in league standings.
↑ Back to top5. Squad Check-In (At the Club)
This is for club-run check-in — a front desk tablet or similar managing a walk-in queue. (Individual shooter accounts don't see this tab; it's a club-side tool.)
5.1 Checking In a Squad
- Go to the Squads tab.
- Enter a squad name or number (optional), pick the discipline, and add each shooter's name.
- Tap Check In Squad.
The queue updates live for everyone using Break Board at the club — no separate refresh needed.
5.2 Houses (Trap)
When checking in a Trap squad, House 1/2/3 chips let you tag which physical house the squad is assigned to, so the queue stays organized when running multiple houses at once.
5.3 The Queue & Leapfrogging
Squads are shown in order: Now Shooting, then Waiting (in check-in order, with the front one marked ON DECK), then Done. If the squad on deck isn't ready to go, use the ▲/▼ buttons on their card to swap them with the squad behind them — the next squad instantly becomes ON DECK. No need to remove and re-check-in anyone.
5.4 Adding a Late Shooter
If a squad already checked in gets a last-minute addition, find their card (status Waiting or Now Shooting) and tap "+ Add Shooter." Type the name and confirm — no need to remove the squad and start over.
↑ Back to top6. History & Trends
The History tab shows every round you've logged, most recent first, with a trend chart of hit percentage over time. If you shoot more than one discipline, filter by discipline to see (and chart) just that one — or view All to see every discipline's trend line overlaid together, with an arrow showing whether you're trending up, down, or flat.
Tap any round to expand it and see a dot-by-dot breakdown of hits and misses per station.
↑ Back to top7. Leagues
7.1 Individual vs. Team Leagues
A league can be Individual (everyone competes on their own) or Team (players grouped into teams of up to 8, team scores are the sum of each roster member's net score). Every league is locked to one discipline — a club running both a Trap league and a Sporting Clays league sets those up as two entirely separate leagues, each with its own invite code, teams, and standings.
7.2 Joining with a Code
From the League tab (or Profile → Join/Create a League), enter the 4-digit invite code your organizer gives you. For a team league, you'll then pick an existing team or start a new one.
You can be in more than one league at once — e.g., a Trap league and a Sporting Clays league simultaneously, each fully separate.
7.3 Creating a League
- Go to the League tab and find "Join / Create a League."
- Pick the discipline and whether it's Individual or Team.
- Name it and tap Create New League Group.
- You'll get a 4-digit invite code to share, plus a separate Organizer PIN.
7.4 Being in More Than One League
If you're in multiple leagues, a switcher appears at the top of the League tab so you can pick which one you're viewing.
7.5 Weekly Standings & Handicap
Standings are calculated per week, per discipline. Handicap is based on your average hit rate from your own prior weeks in that specific discipline — a first-time shooter uses their own round as the starting baseline. The club can adjust the handicap factor (0–100%) from the League tab.
7.6 Season Schedule (Team Leagues)
For team leagues, the Organizer can generate a round-robin schedule: every team plays every other team, rotated across the club's houses week to week. Pick the season length and how many houses your club has, and it builds the whole schedule at once — including a bye rotation if you have an odd number of teams.
The current week is highlighted, and a reminder banner shows on the Squads check-in screen so scorekeepers know that week's matchups without hunting for the schedule.
7.7 Flights
For a big field (say, 50 shooters), Flights split standings into evenly-sized groups by score after a chosen week — e.g. 5 flights of 10, highest scorers down to lowest. From the week after the split onward, each flight runs its own separate standings, so a flight's winner is genuinely the best score within that flight, not just wherever they land in the full field.
7.8 Substitutions
Missing a regular player for a given week's team league night? On the League tab, under Substitutions, pick the week, the team, who's missing, and who's filling in. For that week only, the substitute's score counts for the team — the permanent roster doesn't change, and their name shows up right in the Score tab's roster picker labeled "(subbing for ___)."
7.9 Importing a Roster from Excel
For team leagues, instead of adding players one at a time, the Organizer can bulk-import a roster from a spreadsheet:
- Build a spreadsheet with two columns: column A = Team Name, column B = Player Name, one row per person (repeat the team name for every player on that team).
- On the League tab, under Import Roster, upload the file and check or uncheck "First row is a header" to match your file.
- Review the preview — nothing is saved yet. It shows every team, every player, and flags anything worth double-checking (a name appearing twice, a team over 8 players, a name on two different teams).
- Choose Merge (adds these teams/players into the existing roster, keeping current teams intact) or Replace (wipes every team and rebuilds only from this file — use with care).
7.10 Exporting & Sharing Standings
From the League tab you can export the current board as a CSV, export the full season as an XLSX spreadsheet, or generate a shareable standings poster or a full ink-friendly printable list — useful for posting on social media or a club bulletin board.
↑ Back to top8. Sporting Clays Course Setup
8.1 Your Club's Course
Every physical Sporting Clays course is laid out differently, so each club can set its own station names and target counts. From Profile (club login only), under Sporting Clays Course, edit each station's name and target count, add or remove stations, and tap Save & Publish Course. This becomes the default whenever anyone at your club scores Sporting Clays, and it's also what visiting shooters pull in when they enter your club's code.
8.2 Visiting Another Club
On the Score tab, picking Sporting Clays shows a "Visiting? Load Their Course By Code" field. Enter the host club's code (not their password) and their exact station layout loads in for that round.
↑ Back to top9. Troubleshooting & FAQ
I forgot my password. What do I do?
Club login: tap "Forgot password?" on the sign-in screen and enter your club code — a reset link goes to the recovery email on file. Personal account: same link, but you enter your own email directly. If a club has no recovery email on file (an older club), someone needs to add one from Profile first, or contact support directly.
My round didn't count toward the league.
Two common causes: the "Count toward league" toggle wasn't turned on before finishing the round, or (for team leagues) the shooter's name doesn't exactly match a name on the team roster. Use the roster picker dropdown on the Score tab instead of typing the name freehand — it guarantees an exact match.
Can I be in more than one league at once?
Yes. Since each league is locked to one discipline, you can be in a Trap league, a Sporting Clays league, and a 5-Stand league all at the same time, each fully separate.
The install button on my iPhone doesn't do anything.
That's expected — Apple doesn't allow any website to trigger a one-tap install. Tapping the button shows a short picture guide instead: tap Share, then Add to Home Screen, then Add.
Someone at my club isn't the organizer but wants to help manage the schedule.
Share the league's Organizer PIN with them (found on the League tab summary card, visible to whoever's already unlocked as organizer on their device). Entering the correct PIN on a second device unlocks the same tools there.
Two people are trying to edit the schedule or flights at the same time — what happens?
The first device to open it gets to edit; a second device sees a view-only notice showing how long ago the first one started. This clears itself automatically after about 10 minutes of inactivity, or as soon as the first device finishes.
A substitute's score isn't showing up for their team.
Substitutions are set per week — double check the substitution was added for the correct week, and that the substitute's name was picked from the Score tab's roster dropdown (which shows the "(subbing for ___)" label) rather than typed in free-hand.
Can a visiting shooter score using my club's course without my password?
Yes — that's by design. The "load a course by code" and "join a league by code" features only need the club's code, not its password, since a course layout and league invite code aren't meant to be secret — the password is what actually protects your club's private data.
What happens if our club's trial expires and we haven't paid?
Everyone loses access to that club's data — club login and any personal accounts that had joined it — until it's licensed. Nothing is deleted; it's all there again as soon as the club is marked licensed.
